Softball hosted Surry Community College after switching locations because of the rain on Saturday. The Trojans took game one, giving them their first win of the season before dropping game two.
The Trojans are currently 1-3 overall and have not started conference play.
FTCC vs. Surry CC:
Game One- 10-9, Win
Game one was a back and forth battle between the Knights and the Trojans. Surry took the lead in the top of the first but the Trojans pulled within one in the bottom of the inning. The Knights pulled ahead by five runs until the Trojans had a big bottom of the fourth five-run inning to tie the game at seven. The game was tied at nine going into the bottom of the seventh with the Trojans having one last at bat.
Isabella Finelli (Pembroke, NC) and Albani Hooker (Sanford, NC) combined for seven innings on the mound.
The Trojans scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first off of a two-out double by Mia Vasquez (St. Pauls, NC) to get on the board.
A big fourth inning rally plated the next four Trojan runs starting with a single by Vasquez to lead off the inning. Maddie Burns (Sanford, NC) followed with another single before catcher, Alyssa Lauber (Lillington, NC), hit a double to left center earning two RBIs. The inning continued when Raven Ross-Gillespie (West End, NC) hit a one out single. Lauber scored on a fielder’s choice, putting Trinity Gaither (Bunnlevel, NC) at the plate with two outs. Gaither had an infield single to put runners at the corners for Finelli who doubled to left field to tie the game at seven.
The Trojans took the lead in the bottom of the fifth from a solo homerun by Vasquez.
The Knights pulled ahead by one in the sixth, but the Trojans rallied to tie the game back at nine runs off a Gaither double and singles by Jasmine Wagner (Fayetteville, NC) and Vasquez.
The game still tied in the seventh, Lauber walked to lead off the inning, followed by a fielder’s choice to keep a runner only on first. Ross-Gillespie walked off the game with a double to center field.
Vasquez finished 4-4 with three RBIs.
Game Two- 0-8, Loss (5-innings)
A different start in game two for the Knights as they held the Trojans to only two hits in five-innings. Surry went ahead in the first inning by three runs and finished scoring in the fourth and fifth to end the game early.
Vasquez started on the mound for the Trojans giving up three runs before Hooker finished the game allowing the remaining five runs.
Softball travels to neighboring Methodist University to play their JV squad in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:30pm. They will then host Howard Community College in a doubleheader at home on Friday starting at 2pm. All home games are free admission and played at JP Riddle Complex: 2823 Legion Road.
