Abu-Bakr Farrakhan, 28, graduated from FTCC on May 16, 2025, with an Associate in General Education. He has two daughters — ages 7 and 2 — and calls Fayetteville home. He delayed his education after starting a family but returned to college to complete his degree while working.
“I started college right out of high school. I originally went to ECU for nursing school, but a year and a half into that, I knew I didn’t want to do that anymore. I came back home to Fayetteville and tried to figure out what I wanted to do. In the meantime, I had a kid and had my college education was delayed.
“But two years ago, I said, ‘I’m just going to finish it out.’
“I know what I want to do now. I’m working in my career path, and I’m just trying to finish my education. I have two daughters, so I try to set a good example for them.
“I work with the local government in the county. I’m a facility manager for the Department of Social. So I pretty much do project management and oversee maintenance and construction projects at the department. We have five buildings that we actually operate.
“I’m going to be transferring from FTCC to (Fayetteville State University), so I can finish my degree in business administration to get the credentials to seek a higher level in the same job field. Past where I’m at now, everything requires a degree or at least gives me an edge up on somebody else.”
